haha, they have those exit signs here too. and i too took a while to figure them out. :P

as for the shopping carts, here they're chained together and the little latches work in such a way that you have to put a one-euro coin in the latch to unlock it, and then chain them back together to get it out again. on the one hand, clever. on the other hand, if i ever wanted a shopping cart, i'm pretty sure i would think it was worth a euro. :P

(i was pretty flustered at the time and decided it was easier to continue with my one-basket-in-each-hand technique, getting bashed on the shins with every step. stocking up to cook for oneself when one doesn't have a car is a Huge Hassle.)

Also, you cracked me up with your bit about the "not understanding face". :D There's always the "not understanding Arabic" face that I make, but I don't think that falls into the category of "less dopey". ;)
